The Zeeman Effect and Hyperfine Structure in Mercury

چکیده
1. Draw a diagram that shows the effect of a weak magnetic field on the otherwise degenerate substates involved in the transitions which produce the green line (5460.7 Å) and the yellow doublet (5769.6 Å and 5790.7 Å) of mercury. (See Melissinos (1966) [1], page 334 but beware of the error in the structure diagram for the 5790.7 Å line!) Note that there is another mercury yellow line at 5789.7 Å but it is quite weak.

The Zeeman and Hyperfine Splittings of Mercury Emission Spectra
The Zeeman and hyperfine splittings of the emission spectra from mercury vapor lamps are investigated through the use of a Fabry-Perot interferometer. In the absence of a magnetic field, a low-intensity peak near the major 5461 Å emission line can be observed; this yields a hyperfine shift of frequency 12.70 ± 0.19 GHz, consistent with the bHg emission shift of 12.21 GHz. In the presence of dif...
متن کاملPolarization quantum beat spectroscopy of HCF(A1A"). I. 19F and 1H hyperfine structure and Zeeman effect.
To further investigate the (19)F and (1)H nuclear hyperfine structure and Zeeman effect in the simplest singlet carbene, HCF, we recorded polarization quantum beat spectra (QBS) of the pure bending levels 2(0) (n) with n = 0-7 and combination bands 1(0) (1)2(0) (n) with n = 1-6 and 2(0) (n)3(0) (1) with n = 0-3 in the HCF A(1)A(")<--X(1)A(') system. The spectra were measured under jet-cooled co...
متن کاملSpectra of Maser Radiation from a Turbulent, Circumnuclear Accretion Disk. III. Circular polarization
Calculations are performed for the circular polarization of maser radiation from a turbulent, Keplerian disk that is intended to represent the sub-parsec disk at the nucleus of the galaxy NGC4258. The polarization in the calculations is a result of the Zeeman effect in the regime in which the Zeeman splitting is much less than the spectral linebreadth. Plausible configurations for turbulent mag...
متن کاملZeeman Effect in Mercury
Michael Faraday first examined atomic spectra under the influence of a magnetic field in 1862 without much success. It would prove to be his final experimental attempt. Upon discovery of this fact, Pieter Zeeman again attempted the procedure in 1896, and was led to the startling conclusion that spectral lines seemed to split into multiple components in the presence of a magnetic field. Known as...
متن کاملNuclear Zeeman Effect in W182 in Iron
The Mossbauer effect in the 100-keV 2+ ~ 0+ transition in W182 was observed with dilute t~ngsten in iron alloy absorbers with concentrations from 0.5-5.0 at.%W at 4.2°K. From the Zeeman spectra In external longitudinal magnetic fields, the g factor of the first excited 2+ state was found to be O.~2±0.O~, and the hyperfine field at tungsten nuclei in iron was found to be -708±25 kOe. The hyperfi...
